New £250,000 robot installed at newly refurbished Llandudno Hospital pharmacy

A £250,000 investment to improve medicines management at Llandudno Hospital has seen a new dispensing robot installed in the pharmacy along with automated medicines vending facilities on inpatient wards.

The new automated robotics will improve the efficiency in handling medicines at the hospital freeing up the pharmacy and nursing team to spend more time with patients.
The investment also includes improved access to the pharmacy at the hospital, which can now be reached from the hospital’s main corridor.
Over the coming months, patients will be able to see when their prescriptions are ready for collection via a screen at various seating areas within the hospital.
Dr Berwyn Owen, Chief Pharmacist for the Health Board, said: “The new robotics will really improve the safety, productivity and efficiency with handling medicines at Llandudno Hospital as well as eliminating drug errors and improving the speed at which we can dispense products.
“As the robot is also able to manage a large volume of medication, it will also ensure that the hospital is making the best use of the stock as well as supporting the surrounding community with providing care closer to home.
“The investment future-proofs the pharmacy service at Llandudno Hospital, and will support the continued development of services on site.”
The mayor of Llandudno, Councillor Francis Davis, was on hand to officially open the newly refurbished pharmacy.
Cllr Davis said: “It’s really good that Betsi Cadwaladr has spent so much money revamping this hospital.
“Llandudno Hospital used to be my second home as a child, I was always falling down and doing silly things, and coming here to be cared for.
“It’s wonderful to see such a superb job done on this, and I want to thank all of the staff who look after the patients so well.”
The new robot was funded thanks to an investment of £200,000 from the Welsh Government Pharmacy Modernisation Fund with the remaining funding provided by the Health Board.
The robot is the fifth in use by the Health Board, with similar technology also in use at Glan Clwyd Hospital, Ysbyty Gwynedd, Wrexham Maelor Hospital and HMP Berwyn
